Yesterday and today students will be learning about Reconstruction.

ASPEN is up-to-date with the exception of the Civil War Soldier Projects and Letters which I'm working on grading right now.  Any grade with a zero can be turned in for half credit.  The Civil War Soldier Project will make up half of the quarter 4 grade.

Project is due Monday, June 12...remember to work on the other parts at home (maps, illustrations, artifacts....) and bring them with you to class Monday to organize!

1. Open your Soldier Project Notes Doc
2. Open What does your letter/journal entry need? and go over together as a class
3. Create your own doc to start your letter or journal entry. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE ALL THE REQUIRED INFO IN YOUR HEADER!!!
4. Take a few moments to think about how to turn your facts into a story. What characters could you create to show your information? What emotion and details can you add to make your reader feel like he/she was there?  Powerful writing is specific writing and the the strength is in word choice!


BY THE END OF CLASS YOU SHOULD HAVE 1/2 OF YOUR FIRST LETTER/JOURNAL ENTRY COMPLETE...IF NOT IT'S HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEKEND!!!

Today in class we partner read articles on the Emancipation Proclamation and discussed its significance. Emancipation Classwork Reading & Questions Tonight for HW students will be reading an article on African Americans during the Civil War and answering questions.

We are moving from our background research into creating projects on an abolitionist Abolition Research Project

Yesterday we discussed the path Richard Allen took to freedom and his influence as a black abolitionist.  Today students will learn about the Nat Turner Rebellion and the impact slave uprisings had on slave treatment. The video below helps guide this conversation.  For the rest of the class students will finish their Abolitionist Background Research and start their Abolitionist Project which is due May 9th.

Slavery in Antebellum America

Today we started using primary and secondary source documents to learn about the system of slavery, the daily life of slaves, and the slave trade. We will be using the information we gather from the documents to expand our understanding of life in Antebellum America.

Updated Grade Reports went home today with all history students that were not testing today.  If a student owed multiple assignments I've stapled copies of the assignments to the grade report. Grades close April 11th so any work must be turned in before then!

Yesterday in class we watched "Hidden America: Children of the Plains" (See yesterday's blog post!) which highlighted the problems on reservations.  Today we continued the discussion and watched the video below about current Native American youth activism and what can be done to help.

Hamilton & Jefferson Writing Assignment

Now that we learned about Hamilton & Jefferson's perspective, it is time to decide who you agree with more!  Write a short essay (at least 1 paragraph) about who you agree with more and why.  For project details see HERE  First draft due Friday

1. Discuss: Who do you agree with more? Hamilton or Jefferson? Why
2. Open a google doc, name it “Hamilton/Jefferson Writing Assignment” and share it with me.
3. Start writing.

The Whiskey Rebellion

Today students will be divided into 2 groups.  Each group will read one of the following articles and answer the questions

Historama- Whiskey Rebellion
a few students will use this website for info: Constitutional Rights Foundation-Whiskey Rebellion

Next students will find a partner with the other article and discuss what happened during the Whiskey Rebellion and what impact it had.

Students will complete a write-around with 2 people from each group.


George Washington & Slavery

This week's calendar: Calendar Week of March 6th

Today in class we reviewed our grades, passed back corrected work, and cleaned out the history section of our binders.  Students can turn in missing work until March 14th for half credit.

We began to examine documents written by George Washington in order to investigate his opinion of slavery and how it changed over time.  We will finish this activity in class on Friday. George Washington & Slavery Primary Sources

Yesterday we enjoyed presentations from students who researched the role of Native Americans during the American Revolution and learned about George Washington as the first president.

Today in class students will have a presentation from NHS guidance department about 9th grade.

Today I will be out working on curriculum so students will be watching "Liberty: A History of US" video and taking notes.  It will be a review of the causes of the Revolution, the fighting and political developments during the Revolution and the Philadelphia Convention and the Constitution.

I'm also sorry that I'm behind on my grading. ASPEN is NOT up-to-date.
